A Guide on How to Live

Writer's picture: Sarah StrainSarah Strain

As the year is beginning to wind to an end, you start to reflect on the struggles and horrors of the year 2020. Although there are probably more awful experiences rather than good, it is important to also reflect on the positive things. Some people, may be reflecting and realize there were no positive things, and then I ask you, to reflect on what you did to attempt to make positive things out of the negative. Here, in doing that, is where I found my Guide on How to Live.

  1. Force a smile: Even in times where I had endless nights of tears and sorrow, I'd try and find a way to force myself to smile. Whether it was putting on one of my favorite videos, or watching a comedy skit, I'd do everything I could to force a smile, as I noticed it was hard to be upset while smiling.

  2. Learn a new hobby: While taking a mental break visiting family in Colorado, I had picked up a new hobby, and in fact, it was one I was always scared of: Skateboarding. It was a exhilarating and accomplishing feeling to even be able to ride on a skateboard in a straight line, since I refused to even get on one when I was younger.

  3. Take time to relax: During this pandemic and due to birth control, I gained awful anxiety. My doctor told me the importance of just taking a moment to simply so something you love that relaxes you. I started yoga at night, watching a reality show I love, going on walks, and just simple things that relax you and bring you that peaceful feeling.

  4. Exercise: Exercise has many obvious benefits, but one is the increase in endorphins and dopamine. It can be a way to get away from current problems for a moment, and just simply make you feel good. Even if its just one day a week, anything can help.

  5. See friends and family (safely): Family is an instant shot of happiness for most people. It is important to take time to talk to your family on the phone, FaceTime, or have a social distance get together. I'm sure your family needs it just as much as you do.

  6. Practice self care: Taking good care of your body and health is very important, and can lead to feeling great as well. Take a bubble bath, give yourself a pedicure, play with makeup, and just make yourself feel good.

  7. Love one another: Life is too short to spread negativity. Other people are struggling just like you, and maybe need someone in their life to show them kindness. Being kind and loving others is a win-win, and improves everyone's' mental health

  8. Reflect: This is one of the most important steps. Its good to make sure you reflect on yourself and the things you have accomplished, as well as the bad things that have happened, and learn to grow from them. These steps are what I have learned are necessary to keep living, and love the life you live.
